The old homeowner moved out.
Having found the dateables and the stress of being under Valdivian watch too much to handle, they left Skylar behind, and a house full of disappointed objects.
But now, two new ones have moved in— together. Being non-Valdivianites, they're mostly out of Valdivian's radar, and can at least go into the backyard safely... not to mention bringing in new objects, and happily revitalizing the old.

basic explanation of date everything ↯

The player loses their job and receives a mysterious pair of glasses from a stranger, the "Dateviators". These glasses allow them to "date" everyday objects in their home. The "Dateviators" enable the player to "Directly Acknowledge a Thing's Existence" (D.A.T.E.), transforming objects into anthropomorphic characters with whom they can interact.
