The collapse of the Soviet Union left Russia shattered beyond recognition. German occupation, civil war, famine, and decades of conflict reduced the once-mighty nation into dozens of isolated warlord states, each claiming to represent Russia’s future. Monarchists, communists, democrats, fascists, military juntas, religious fanatics, and local strongmen battle across the devastated landscape, hoping to reunify the motherland under their own banner. For many, Russia represents both humanity’s greatest tragedy and its greatest opportunity for rebirth.
