Over three thousand years ago, humans went to war with elves. That war sparked a global conflict involving all races, a full-scale World War, the largest and longest war ever recorded, lasting three thousand years.
It has been just 150 years since the war ended. The world's technology has advanced so much that a person can now lose an arm and regrow it without the aid of magic. Laws have been enacted against casting. Citizens don't protest, kill, or commit crimes. The human population is slowly shrinking as they interbreed with elves and other races, such as the Viri people. As pure-blood humans become rarer, they are valued more highly. Crime is virtually extinct; only 3% of all citizens commit major crimes. Petty crimes are down to 5%, and education is skyrocketing. The era of the future is now.
But some things cannot be forgotten.
Since the beginning of the world's formation, the cosmic forces have been at war, fighting, stealing, creating, and reshaping one another. This long Over-God War dictated the formation of everything the world possesses today. Entire laws of reality emerged from conflict beyond mortal understanding. The gods did not simply rule existence—they competed over it, fractured it, and inherited pieces of one another until the world itself became the result of accumulated theft and creation. Yet despite their influence, these entities have become mostly forgotten. Their names disappeared from history, their worship faded, and many who still acknowledge them are considered heretical.
Civilization moved forward anyway.
Then it fell.

An artificial semi-autonomous island city-state off the West coast of the USA, it was founded towards the end of the war against the Cursed. Now, what *are* Cursed, precisely? Well, they are particularly powerful individuals at the cost of their humanity. Every one of them are corrupted, and groups managed to overrun several powerful countries, and many more with an unstable political structure, leading to the war.
Contrary to the Cursed, and thankfully more common, are the Blessed. Without the corrupting to their minds, such individuals are the best defence we have. The island is vulnerable, and any suspected Cursed activity must be reported immediately. No exceptions. Do not engage with the Cursed. We will take them in for thorough questioning to keep you safe. The stability of our nation depends on you. It does not matter how nice they may seem, they will take any advantage they can, and turn against you in a heartbeat. Do not chance it, do not think you know better. Cooperation with the Cursed will ruin your life, one way or another.

These lands are populated by species of all kinds, from Humans, Elves, Dwarves, to Angels and Demons, to various Beastfolk and Undead. Technology diversely differs depending on whether you're in the Dayside or Nightside on this unturning earth, ranging from spears and spells all the way up to futuristic firearms and cybernetics. Conflicts persist to this very day as more disasters quietly approach, unnoticed.

Once a utopia for all is now a miserable, washed-up wasteland where people suffer. Caused by the betrayal of The River King by siding with hell, the divine realm of Varuna and mortal realm of Dydakia were almost destroyed in the Great War between Varuna, Dydakia and Hell. If it weren't for Seraph of Varuna sacrificing himself, both nations would've been completely wiped out. Thankfully, the sacrifice was enough for Varuna to invade and destroy the forces of hell. However, they couldn't save Dydakia from being taken over by The River King, as he formed a barrier around the nation and trapping its residents within the nation.
Now 10,000 years later, the regions still remain under the iron grip of the six lords (the last demons) and The River King. With each lord controlling what goes on in that region, ensuring that people are weak and suffering. However, hope is not lost and with the sacrifice of Seraph the Great Hero, the Dydakians took this sign of mercy as hope for the future that one day a group of heroes can arise to re-awaken him and free all of Dydakia. Allowing them to be free of suffering and return back to Varuna, their home above the falls.

According to both oral tradition and recorded, Paloma discovered her innate magical aptitude at a young age. It marked her as an anomaly within her rural community.
During this period, magical practitioners and diverse species across the region were heavily stigmatized. Many concealed their abilities for fear of persecution, as society viewed supernatural talent with suspicion and hostility. Rather than yielding, Paloma resolved to construct a safe space where individuals of unusual origin or capability may live openly, safely, and without retribution or guilt.
Guided by this, she journeyed deep into a forested basin nestled between minor mountain ridges. The natural landscape, dense trees, abundant rivers, and frequent ambient magical resonance, made it an ideal location for concealment and arcane development. There, she laid the foundation for what would become Slywood, a refuge for “misfits,” as Paloma affectionately described them.
Central to Paloma’s dream was the founding of Ardens Collegium, an academy constructed shortly after the town’s establishment. Its purpose was (and remains) to provide structured education for individuals with magical, supernatural, or anomalous abilities.⊹˚.
