Peace has reigned for twenty years after the destruction of the southern rebels and the integration of the Northern Rebels, now known as the North Star, into the government. Queen Alana and King Consort Daniel's daughter Kiera, has taken over as queen. To help the transition of power, a year after her rule began, a selection was announced for her younger brother Daniel, who hopes to find his husband or wife among the Illean people. All men and women aged 18-22 were invited to apply for the selection, with one being drawn to participate from each province. Zaczęły się Eliminacje, czyli wielki konkurs, w którym wielką nagrodą jest zdobycie ręki jednego z trzech książąt królestwa Reiseno. Jednen tron, trzy korony, trzydzieścioro dziewcząt. Do Eliminacji mogą przystępować dziewczęta między dziewiętnastym a dwudziestym piątym rokiem życia. Swoją kandydaturę musiały zgłaszać w Urzędzie Obsługi Prowincji. Do wypełnienia otrzymały kwestionariusz, w którym należało załączyć także swoje zdjęcie. Selekcja oficjalnie działa na zasadzie losowania, choć w rzeczywistości kobiety są wybierane przez obecnego króla Reiseno. Każda obywatelka państwa, poza klasą zwaną Ósemkami, może złożyć swoją kandydaturę.

Dla młodych kobiet Selekcja jest szansą na wyrwanie się z ponurej rzeczywistości, w której panują klasowe podziały, a na porządku dziennym są głód i choroby. Po kolei dziewczęta przebywające w pałacu będą odpadały, ale nie mogą powrócić do swojego normalnego życia, gdyż po zostaniu wybranym do wzięcia udziału w Konkursie, automatycznie stają się Trójkami. Selekcja to nadzieja na życie w pałacu, w bajkowej krainie jedwabi i klejnotów.

... Ale marzenia tylko trzech z dziewcząt zostaną spełnione. Każda z nich marzy o tym, by zostać Wybraną. Kobiety przekonają się, że pałacowe życie to nie tylko wystawne bale i szafy wypchane sukniami. To również zobowiązania, życie w blasku reflektorów, odpowiednia prezentacja oraz multum poświęceń. Eliminacje poza wyłonieniem partnerki dla książąt Remingtona, Evandera i Sebastiana, mają także na celu weryfikacje zgłoszeń i zderzenie kandydatek z dworską rzeczywistością.

Two years ago, A Selection was held. Isaac Schreave, the son of Queen Katherine and King Damien Schreave of Illea, came of age, and held a Selection. And just as he was on the cusp of announcing his pick for his wife, rebels attacked the palace. Many died, including the king and Isaac. Only Queen Katherine survived, leaving her as the sole ruler of a country she loved. She took time to heal and recover, and once enough time had passed, she made an announcement. Henrietta Digger, one of the Selected, one of the Elite, and Isaac’s second pick, was named as the new heir to the Illean throne. It surprised everyone, but no one seemed to question it. After all, the country needed someone to rule after Katherine retired, and the people had seemed to favor Henrietta later on in Isaac’s Selection. She adopted the last name Schreave, and her family was moved into the palace.

Now, two years later, new Selection applications have gone out, announcing that Henrietta, now 18, was holding her own Selection, open to both men and women. And everyone is wondering what will happen this time..
