As the Third son of Shunzhi Emperor, he ascended the throne at the young age of seven, just shy of his eighth birthday. Although his Imperial Majesty possessed the Mandate of Heaven he was far too young to rule the Empire on his own. As such four regents were assigned to assist in ruling the Empire in his stead. As senior officials valued heavily by the late Emperor, they were personally chosen to serve as regents to the Young Emperor until he became of age.

However, not all four men were equally devoted to their roles as servants of the Empire. Regent Oboi of the Guwalgiya clan was a man of boundless ambition and light integrity and loyalty. Taking advantage of Sonin’s passing, he sought to take full control of the Empire as sole regent. He forced the execution of Suksaha and his family, and sought to control Ebilun, hoarding Imperial Power all to himself.

Heavens were not blind to the actions of such a disloyal servant and divine retribution would soon befall him. With the assistance of the Holy Grand Empress Dowager Zhaosheng, Emperor Kangxi would take back the reins of power and arrested the disloyal Oboi. At the young age of 15, Emperor Kangxi proved himself to be a capable and formidable ruler, one who could not so easily be controlled or challenged by others.
